I have a small shop and I make sculptures. I sometimes use stainless steel tube for the sculpture's base. After tig welding the tube together and blending the welds, what is the best way to get the surface scratches to look uniform? I use a scotchpad on my 5" grinder but it creates semi-circle swirls which are hard to make uniform.
The Welding of Stainless Steels by Pierre-Jean Cunat Materials and Applications Series, Volume 3 rods or coiled wire for automatic welding. The inert gas flow which protects the arc zone from the ambient air, enables a very ‘Selection of shielding gases for welding stainless steel’).
Surface chromium has been lost during the previous processing steps, and, without removal of the scale, the stainless steel would not provide the expected level of corrosion resistance. Chemical removal of this scale is called pickling or descaling, and it is the final processing step.
polish stainless steel Hello Mark, I have made a few custom belt buckles, out of rough s.s. I start using wet dry sand paper 150 gr.then 220 then 320,400,600,800 until I get to 1000 gr.,after i am done i use the polishing compounds. This compounds you can buy them at sears. The tool i use is a dremmel grinder, and i make my own sanding disks out
Comparison of Welding Characteristics of Type 304 Stainless Steel with Carbon Steel Carbon Steel Type 304 Remarks Melting Point 2800 2550-2650 Type 304 requires less heat to produce fusion, which means faster oF Approx. welding for the same heat or less heat input for the same speed.
A No. 2B finish is the most widely used stainless steel surface finish and is produced very similar to the No. 2D finish. Cold rolled, heat treated, pickled and pinch passed – this is a bright cold rolled finish except that the final light cold rolling pass is done using polished rolls.
correctly polished stainless steel not only looks good but it helps to reduce the risk of bacteria being retained by the material. In aggressive environments, such as in the nuclear or offshore industries, a correctly polished stainless steel surface has a better resistance to corrosion than a surface that is roughly or badly polished.
Polished Stainless Steel Sheet is available in a Brushed or Mirror-like finish in both 304 and 316 grades. The most popular choice for cosmetic and architectural applications is our #4 Brushed Finish which is ideal for high traffic areas as it is durable and great at concealing scratches along with having superior corrosion resistance and temperature resistance.
If stainless steel is naturally anti-corrosive, why does it have to be passivated after welding? Passivation is done to restore the protective chromium-oxide layer on the steel surface after it has been destroyed through fabrication. Learn more here.
Passivating welded stainless steel. A discussion started in 2001 but continuing through 2018. 2001. Q. I have a question regarding the need to passivate welds on a 304L tank assembly. This tank will be exposed to a pH of 3-4. My concern is with the carbon migrating due to the heat of the TIG welding.
Characteristics of Food Contact surface materials: stainless steel In addition, the functionality of stainless steel is impacted by surface treatments and coatings. Thus, an awareness of the ized stainless steel products (e.g., welding wire). The two general categories of stain-
Welding Stainless. There are 2 common grades of stainless: 304L (welded using 308L filler), and 316L which is welded using 316L filler. Why is 308L filler used for 304L? Basically there are a number of grades that do similar jobs, 302L, 303L and 304L (they are 17/7, 18/8 and 19/9 respectively). 308L is 20/10 so can be used to weld all 3 grades.
Stainless Steel verlays ladding and Weld A STAINLESS-STEEL-CLADmetal or alloy is a compositeproductconsistingof athin layer of stainless steel in the form of a veneer integrally bonded to one or both surfaces of the substrate. The principal object of such a product is to com- bine, at low cost, the desirable properties of the
Wheel Brushes. Wheel brushes provide straight line brushing action, for surface finishing, cleaning and polishing, weld blending, deburring, and removal of paint, rust, scale, or other contamination.Wheel brushes are appropriate for use with various types of hand-held grinders, bench grinders, robotic finishing equipment, or for mounting onto a driven arbor in a production process.
Using a Wire Brush Or Wheel That Has Not Been Dedicated For Stainless Steel. Getting The Weld Too Hot And For Too Long. Too Much Oxidation In The Weld( A Black Weld Can Be Sanded Smooth And Polished Shiny But That Does Not Change The Fact That It Got Hot And Oxidized) Wrong Rod ( 308L Is The Preferred Rod For Welding 304 Stainless Steel
"Stainless Steel" is the general name for a large family of alloy steels that contain at least 10.5% chromium as part of their composition. At and above this level of chromium, a complex chrome-oxide surface layer forms that prevents further oxygen atoms from penetrating into the steel and thus protects the iron in the matrix from rusting.
How To: Polish Stainless Steel Stainless steel is a popular choice for sinks, appliances, mixing bowls, and more. Its strength, durability, and luster are universally appreciated, but even this go

In mechanical cleaning, care must be taken to prevent contamination of stainless steel surface by steel or iron particles. Sand Blasting. Sand blasting is carried out with garnet sand or clean silica. Cut wire, grit and shot blasting must be performed with stainless steel media with corrosion resistance similar to that of the metal to be cleaned.
Oxide or scaling can develop on stainless steel from exposure to high temperatures, such as those experienced during heat treatment or welding. The pickling process involves submersion of the steel in acid or application of a stiff acid paste (known as pickling paste) to break down and remove the hardened scale and a layer of the steel surface.
